The calculation

How SAT superscoring works

A superscore compares the two sections independently instead of choosing only the highest complete test total.

1

Find the highest Reading & Writing score

Compare that section across every complete attempt you entered.

2

Find the highest Math score

Repeat the comparison for Math; the winning score can come from another date.

3

Add those two section maximums

Their sum is the calculated superscore, from 400 to 1600.

Superscore formula

Highest Reading & Writing + highest Math = calculated SAT superscore

Know the difference

Three score ideas that are easy to confuse

Keeping these separate helps you interpret the result and send scores correctly.

Single-test total

Two sections from one date

Reading & Writing plus Math from the same SAT administration.

Superscore

Highest sections across dates

A college may combine section maximums when its score-use policy permits.

Score Choice

Select complete test dates to send

College Board’s service selects SAT scores by test date, not individual sections.

SAT Superscore Calculator FAQ

Clear answers about section selection, score sending, and how to interpret this calculation.

What is an SAT superscore?

An SAT superscore combines your highest Reading & Writing section score with your highest Math section score across multiple SAT test dates.

How is an SAT superscore calculated?

Find the highest Reading & Writing score, find the highest Math score, and add those two scaled section scores.

Can my highest section scores come from different test dates?

Yes. Combining highest section scores from different test dates is the central calculation performed by this tool.

Does every college use SAT superscores?

No universal policy applies. Colleges and individual programs can use different score policies, so verify the current policy of every institution you are considering.

Can my superscore be lower than my highest single-test score?

No. The maximum Reading & Writing score plus the maximum Math score cannot be lower than the total of either section pair from a complete attempt.

Can my superscore stay the same as my best SAT score?

Yes. This happens when combining the highest sections does not improve on your best complete single-test total.

Can I enter practice-test scores?

You can use scaled practice-test section scores for personal planning, but that result is not an official college-reported superscore.

Is a superscore a new test score on my College Board record?

No. This calculator creates a comparison from existing section scores. A college that superscores applies its own policy to the test-date scores it receives.

Can Score Choice send only my best section from each test date?

No. College Board states that SAT scores are selected and sent by complete test date, not as individual Math or Reading & Writing sections. Check each recipient’s current score-use requirements before sending.
