Shared scale, honest gap

Measure what separates your baseline and goal

Use one official PSAT score report and a supported SAT target. The result shows score arithmetic and one possible route—not how quickly your score will change.

Step 1Select your PSAT assessment

The selection controls the official section and total score limits.

Step 2

Enter both PSAT section scores

PSAT/NMSQT sections use a 160–760 scale.

Enter the reported section score

Step 3

Add your SAT total-score target

Use a deliberate 400–1600 goal in a 10-point increment.

Why direct subtraction is meaningful

The SAT Suite's common vertical scale connects the scores

The calculator compares measured performance levels; it does not convert PSAT points with a multiplier.

Same score, similar current level

College Board explains that the same score across SAT Suite assessments reflects approximately the same performance level at that time.

Different valid ranges

PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 top out at 1520; PSAT 8/9 tops out at 1440; the SAT reaches 1600.

Growth stays separate

The target gap is exact arithmetic. Future growth depends on time, instruction, practice, and later test performance.

Worked example

From an 1180 PSAT/NMSQT baseline to a 1350 SAT target

The gap is 170 points; one valid balanced target combination is 680 Reading & Writing plus 670 Math.

Growth context

A general pattern is not an individual forecast

Keep cohort-level guidance separate from your calculated goal.

+40general total-score context

College Board reports a broad six-month pattern

When students take the SAT at least six months after a PSAT-related assessment, scores generally increase about 20 points per section—40 total. This is descriptive group-level context, not a promise, minimum, or value added by this calculator.

PSAT to SAT goal questions

Understand the common score scale, valid ranges, target route, and limits of the result.

How are PSAT and SAT scores comparable?

College Board places SAT Suite assessments on a common vertical scale. A given section or total score reflects approximately the same current performance level across the assessments, while each assessment has a different minimum and maximum score.

Does my PSAT score predict my future SAT score?

No. This calculator treats the PSAT as a measured starting point and subtracts it from a target. It does not predict future growth, account for time, or guarantee that practice will produce a particular SAT result.

Why do I enter both PSAT section scores?

The official total is the sum of Reading and Writing plus Math. Entering both sections verifies the starting total and allows the tool to show one valid SAT section combination for the target when a nondecreasing route exists.

What are the official PSAT score ranges?

PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 totals range from 320 to 1520, with each section from 160 to 760. PSAT 8/9 totals range from 240 to 1440, with each section from 120 to 720.

Why might the calculator not show a section route?

SAT sections cannot be below 200. For an unusual low target close to a PSAT starting total, there may be no valid SAT section pair that reaches the target without lowering one entered PSAT section. The total gap remains valid, but the tool will not invent a misleading route.

Is the balanced section route a recommendation?

No. It is one arithmetic combination that reaches the target while preserving entered section levels. Use your official knowledge-and-skills report and recent practice to decide which section actually needs more study.

What does College Board say about typical growth?

College Board reports a general pattern of about 20 points per section when the SAT is taken at least six months after a PSAT-related assessment. That group-level context is not a personal forecast and is not added to this calculator's result.

Should I use a college range as my SAT target?

A current college range can inform a goal, but it is not automatically a cutoff or admission probability. Verify the source year and testing policy, then choose a target that fits your college list and preparation evidence.
