Science and history passages often compress a research problem into a few sentences. You do not need specialized background knowledge. You do need to identify what was observed, compared, dated, measured, or documented—and what that evidence can responsibly support.
The Inferences skill
- Valid inference
- A conclusion that follows logically from the text's explicit facts and strongest implications without requiring unsupported information.
Turn the passage into premises
Label the evidence type: experiment, observation, document, object, dataset, or scholarly interpretation. Then ask what the evidence directly bears on. A preserved letter can reveal its writer's stated concern, but not every person's view in that period.
Evidence, inference, and assumption
Observation
A recorded pattern. Example: More fish appeared in branching-coral segments.
Supported inference
A limited interpretation. Example: Those structures are associated with fish habitat in the survey.
Causal overreach
A cause not established by design. Example: Coral alone causes fish abundance everywhere.
Control scope and certainty

- Identify evidence
Name what researchers or historians actually observed or examined.
- Identify comparison
Mark the groups, dates, sources, or conditions being contrasted.
- State limit
Note what the evidence cannot represent or rule out.
- Infer
Choose the conclusion that explains the pattern without exceeding that limit.
