Informational and scientific passages compress background, methods, observations, and conclusions into a small space. The central idea usually connects those parts rather than repeating the most technical detail.

What the SAT tests

The SAT asks what the text mainly communicates or what detail it states. You are not expected to know the topic beforehand; definitions, comparisons, and qualifications inside the passage provide what you need.

A repeatable strategy

Four-pass method

  1. Identify the text type

    Is it explaining a process, reporting a finding, describing a resource, or comparing cases?

  2. Separate method from result

    What researchers did is not the same as what they found.

  3. Translate technical nouns

    Restate relationships in plain language without deleting necessary terms.

  4. Preserve caution

    Words such as can, may, often, and in some cases prevent overstatement.
