Official interpretation
What meeting a benchmark means—and what it does not
The official thresholds support a readiness interpretation, not an admissions decision.
It does mean
Section-level readiness evidence
College Board connects meeting a section benchmark with a 75% chance of earning at least a C in related first-semester, credit-bearing college courses.
It does not mean
A guarantee, cutoff, or admission probability
The comparison does not evaluate a college's policy, your application, a scholarship requirement, or future performance.
Worked example
500 Reading & Writing and 510 Math
The 1010 total equals the sum of the two benchmark values, but the section result still matters.

SAT benchmarks are not PSAT grade-level benchmarks
This page accepts only SAT section scores on the 200–800 scale. PSAT assessments have their own grade-level benchmark values and scale ranges.

What are the current SAT College and Career Readiness benchmarks?
College Board lists 480 for Reading and Writing and 530 for Math. This page records the source and verification date so the values can be maintained if official guidance changes.
Do I meet the overall benchmark if my total is at least 1010?
Not necessarily. The benchmarks are section-level. A high score in one section cannot offset a below-benchmark score in the other; both Reading and Writing and Math must independently meet their values.
What does meeting a section benchmark mean?
College Board states that a student who meets or exceeds a section benchmark has a 75% chance of earning at least a C in related first-semester, credit-bearing college courses. It is an evidence-based readiness indicator, not a guarantee.
Does being below a benchmark mean I cannot succeed in college?
No. College Board explicitly describes readiness as a continuum and notes that students below the benchmarks can still succeed, especially with additional preparation and perseverance.
What does approaching mean on this page?
The official SAT ranges classify Reading and Writing 460–470 and Math 510–520 as approaching. Scores below those bands are labeled not yet approaching; scores at or above 480 and 530 meet or exceed.
Is the benchmark an admission cutoff or recommended college target?
No. Colleges set their own testing policies and evaluate applications in context. A readiness benchmark is not a college-specific admission range, scholarship rule, or score-submission recommendation.
Should I compare a PSAT score with these SAT benchmarks?
No. PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 use grade-level benchmarks and different score ranges. This calculator is only for SAT Reading and Writing and Math section scores.
What should I do after comparing my scores?
Use section and domain evidence to decide what to study. If one section is below its benchmark, inspect that section first; if both meet, maintain skills and choose goals based on your own college list and preparation evidence.
