What the output contains

One comparison, two levels of precision

The official table provides both a practical single point and the score interval behind it.

Comparable score

The ACT Composite or preferred SAT total is the official single point to use when a workflow requires one score.

Official SAT range

The interval shows every SAT total associated with that ACT Composite. It reveals the precision hidden by a single point.

Source and scope

The converter uses the joint 2018 total-score table only. It does not create unsupported rows, percentiles, or section combinations.

Worked example

An SAT 1400 corresponds to ACT 31

The same official row connects ACT 31 to an SAT range of 1390–1410 and a preferred SAT point of 1400.

Use the table correctly

Three guardrails prevent misleading comparisons

These limits come directly from College Board and ACT guidance.

1

Convert individual scores only

Do not convert averages, medians, or score ranges. Aggregate conversion can introduce error.

2

Keep the two tests separate

Do not combine SAT and ACT sections into a cross-test superscore or treat the exams as identical.

3

Use multiple measures

Pair concordance with official practice, course performance, college policies, and other relevant evidence.

SAT and ACT conversion questions

Understand official concordance, ranges, supported scores, and responsible use.

What is an ACT/SAT concordance?

A concordance establishes a relationship between scores on assessments that measure similar, but not identical, constructs. The official tables compare scores with the same rank in the study group; they do not make the two tests interchangeable.

Is the converted score what I would earn on the other test?

No. College Board and ACT state that a concorded score is not a perfect prediction of performance on the other test. Use an official full-length practice test to evaluate actual format fit and performance.

Why does ACT-to-SAT show both one score and a range?

The official table relates each ACT Composite to an SAT total range and identifies a preferred SAT score when one point is needed. Showing both prevents the single point from appearing more exact than the study supports.

Why does the converter stop at SAT 590 and ACT 9?

Those are the lowest total-score rows in the official 2018 ACT Composite/SAT Total concordance. The tool does not extrapolate unsupported values below the published table.

Can I convert an average, median, or college score range?

No. College Board specifically advises against converting aggregate values such as means, medians, or ranges because doing so can introduce error. Convert an individual student's valid score only.

Can I combine an SAT section with an ACT section to make a superscore?

No. College Board advises not to combine section scores from the two different tests into one superscore. Follow each institution's current score-use and superscoring policy.

Are these concordance tables updated every year?

No. ACT identifies the 2018 tables as the most recent ACT/SAT concordance and notes that they are not updated annually. This page records the source and verification date so the basis remains visible.

Should the converted score decide whether I take the SAT or ACT?

Not by itself. Compare timed full-length practice results, question format, pacing, accessibility needs, available test dates, and each college's current policies before choosing a test strategy.
