Subjects use 1–7
Seven is the highest DP subject grade and one is the lowest.
SL and HL are equal in DP points
Course levels differ in scope and teaching hours, but both grades contribute equally to the official diploma total.
Six subjects + core = 45
Six grades can contribute 42 points, with up to three more from TOK and the Extended Essay.

Is there an official IB-to-GPA conversion?
No. The International Baccalaureate states that it does not provide or endorse a universal conversion to the US A–F or 4.0 GPA scale. Institutions may recalculate grades using their own criteria. This page therefore labels its built-in table as an editable planning reference.
What conversion does the reference option use?
The disclosed reference maps IB grades 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 to 4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, and 0.0. It is not an IB-endorsed table. Choose Custom mapping or Direct points to reproduce a specific school or university policy.
Does Higher Level automatically earn extra GPA weight?
Not universally. The official IB Diploma points calculation values SL and HL grades equally. A local transcript or evaluator may weight HL coursework differently, so this calculator lets you apply no HL boost, a visible +0.5 planning example, or a custom boost.
How is the full IB Diploma total calculated?
The official points total adds six subject grades, each from 1 to 7, and up to three core points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. The maximum is 45. CAS is required for the diploma but is not assigned points.
Does reaching 24 points guarantee the IB Diploma?
No. Twenty-four is the minimum total-points threshold, but the IB also applies additional subject, level, core, and CAS conditions. This calculator reports only whether the entered point total reaches 24 and never declares that a diploma has been awarded.
Can I use predicted grades?
Yes. Select Predicted when planning with current estimates or Final when entering awarded results. The calculation is the same, but the result label preserves the distinction so an estimate is not presented as an official final record.
How do credits affect the converted GPA?
Each converted point value is multiplied by its course credit value. Total quality points are divided by total credits, so a two-credit course has twice the effect of a one-credit course. Use the relative credit values from the policy you are trying to model.
Can this result be submitted to a university?
No. It is an independent planning estimate, not an IB transcript or institution-issued GPA. Submit official grades in the format requested by the institution and verify its current recognition and conversion policy directly.
