Read the range already on your report

Put one official score range into clear context

Choose the score type, then copy its score and two boundaries exactly. The calculator explains the span and position without estimating a different range.

Step 1

Choose the score shown on your report

Total scores use 400–1600; section scores use 200–800.

Score type
Step 2

Copy the range from your official score report

Enter total-score values from 400 to 1600 in 10-point increments.

The main total shown with this range

The lower value from the same range

The upper value from the same range

Your entries are analyzed on this page and are not saved.

How it works

Three inputs, no hidden estimation

The page preserves the numbers on your report and performs only transparent arithmetic.

1

Select the score type

Keep a total score separate from either 200–800 section score.

2

Copy all three values

Enter the reported score plus the lower and upper boundaries printed with it.

3

Inspect the range

See its width, each boundary distance, and the score's position inside the range.

Worked example

A 1220 total with an 1180–1260 reported range

Illustrative values show the arithmetic; students should use the numbers on their own report.

Score1220
Upper1260

Interpretation

The score is centered in an 80-point reported range.

The range adds measurement context to the 1220 result. It does not change the reported score to an average, forecast a retake, or create an admission probability.

Avoid a common mix-up

Three different meanings of ‘SAT score range’

Use the label and source—not the phrase alone—to identify the numbers you have.

College data

College percentile range

A reported student cohort's 25th–75th percentile scores.

Use the College Score Range tool

Read it correctly

What the range can and cannot tell you

Keep the official interpretation useful without turning it into a claim it cannot support.

It can show

Expected score variation

  • the lower and upper values reported with one score,
  • the arithmetic width of that range,
  • how far the score sits from each boundary, and
  • why one result should be read with measurement context.

It cannot show

A guaranteed future outcome

  • your exact next SAT score,
  • the improvement preparation will produce,
  • your percentile or admission probability, or
  • whether a college will consider a score competitive.

SAT score-report range questions

Clear answers about the source, interpretation, and limits of the reported range.

What is the score range on an official SAT score report?

College Board describes it as the amount your score would likely vary if you took a different administration under identical conditions. It provides context around one reported score; it is not a second score or a prediction of your next result.

Can this calculator generate my official score range from my score alone?

No. This calculator intentionally does not invent an official range. Copy the score and lower and upper boundaries shown on your official score report PDF, then use the page to inspect that reported range.

Where can I find the range?

Open the official score report PDF connected to your College Board score. Use the range printed with the same total or section score you select here. Do not copy a college's admission range or the overall 400–1600 test scale.

Does the range mean my next score will definitely fall inside it?

No. The range communicates likely variation under identical conditions; it is not a guarantee. Preparation, pacing, test-day conditions, and other differences may also affect another result.

Is this the same as an SAT percentile?

No. A percentile compares a score with scores from a reference group. A score-report range describes likely score variation. The two answer different questions.

Is this the same as a college's 25th–75th percentile range?

No. A college range summarizes scores for a reported student cohort. Your official score-report range describes variation around your test result. Use the SAT College Score Range Calculator for college comparisons.

Why can the reported score be off-center within the range?

The calculator preserves the official boundaries exactly as entered and shows the distance to each side. It does not force symmetry, widen the range, or move a boundary to create a visually balanced result.

What should I do after reading the range?

Use the score as your current reported result, the range as uncertainty context, and several comparable practice or official results to inspect a trend. Review section and domain evidence before choosing what to study next.
